I couldn’t quite believe it.
It was early in the year in 2013 and I was on maternity leave after having my second son. As is common with a lot of mothers, I had envisaged my time off work as a time to step back, reassess where I was in my career and make some changes.
At the time, I was working for an insurance company but wanted to transition into banking as the banking industry had more relevance to what I was doing at the time. However, every recruiter I spoke to told me it was impossible to move from insurance to banking without banking experience. It was baffling as I was confused as to how to get banking experience if no one was willing to give me a chance!
So one evening, I decided to apply directly to the banks cutting out the seemingly negative recruiters (sorry any recruiter reading this). I didn’t apply to just any bank but to a Tier 1 US investment bank. I didn’t apply for any role but for a team leader role in Audit having never worked in Audit!
Imagine my shock when I was invited to and went for the interviews (about 12 of them). Imagine my bigger shock when I was offered the role! This experience thought me a valuable career lesson- back yourself! If you lose everything else on your career journey, don’t lose your confidence. Hold on to that childlike belief that you are super, you can do anything, and you are deserving.
